Just finishing an early morning nursing shift 5 months pregnant, I was far too tired to get home and create a delicious and nutritious meal.
The hubby was in the field planting wheat waiting to satisfy his grumbling tummy with a hearty meal.
I took that incredible effort (haha) to drive to KFC and order our meals.
Although I don't love doing the fast food thing, I've come to realize I can't be so hard on myself, feeling the pressure to make big old fashioned farm-wife meals on the daily.
Dinner was served in less than 10 minutes and made by someone else. I took the break and called it a cheat night! ;)
As it is my standard with field meals, we all sit together at the trunk and mow down. This gives Mike a bit of a break from the bouncing seat and some time together - albeit maybe only 10 minutes.
Otherwise, we all try to pile in the combine or tractor and eat which generally ends up a messy disaster with more food on the floor than in our bellies.
It was a cool fall day when exposed to the wind but pretty hot when the sun was beaming down on you.
When Mike left us to get back to work (not in the same field) I figured it was cool enough that Freya and I could finish our meals in the trunk with the hatch down (I drive a Ford Edge- SUV) and when we were done we'd just lift the gate using the inside button and jet back home.
What did I learn.....
1. KFC is not a good idea when you already have heartburn. 2. Having a picnic in your trunk at the field with your family is cute but when your husband leaves don't shut the trunk to finish eating because it's too cold outside.
Why..?
The internal buttons don't work from the inside when the car has been off for 20+ minutes.
We were locked in the trunk!
I started to laugh hysterically from the situation wondering what I was going to do.
I couldn't open the door, couldn't get the seats to fold down, didn't have my phone or keys on me, and had a toddler who was done eating sitting next to me... in the middle of a field... on a side road.
We were seriously locked in there and Mike was not going to be back for at least an hour or more. All the windows up and the temperature was rising, not to mention, my pregnant belly wasn't fitting through the tiny headrest space even if I tried!
Lessons
#1. Keep your keys in your pocket at all times #2. Have your phone in your pocket to call for help at all times #3. Train your toddler to squeeze through the headrest, crawl into the front seat without being distracted by car toys and books only to hit the trunk door ajar button (achieved by reminding her how she let's the dog out of the trunk because saying left and right is useless to a 2 year old) #4. Always have an escape plan
#5. Always bring a sweater
#6. Laugh your ass off... at yourself!
**not a photo of that day, but another field meal day... so here we are looking fab**
