Family Day: Your Time to Shine

There aren't a lot of days dedicated to family time - where it's only your immediate family and you're not running around to various events.

Take Christmas and every other holiday where you're running from one event to the next to see everyone you share an ounce of blood with. These holidays are so much fun because it is really nice to see family, catch up and play games, but it can be so exhausting and there are times that you realize you're crawling into bed and you haven't even spoken to your husband since you left home that morning.

This year's family day was filled with a lot of potential activities but, as it's called "Winterfest" you can imagine a lot of activities were cancelled when the temperature was nearing 10 degrees Celsius. The outdoor skating rink and snowshoeing activities were all cancelled as there was hardly an inch of snow, but the horse rides, archery, fencing, and other activities were a go!

My family decided we would head out to the community breakfast, try face painting and then head out to the horse rides.

Days like this are so important to me. It's a day that is already titled in a way that screams "YOU are committed to your FAMILY today! Put down your phone and open you arms for hugs, open your mind for memories, open your mouth for laughs and open your heart for a boat load of love today!"

As we met with a few of our family members we all started the day with a big smile and a care-free attitude. That day was not filled with any rushing and was truly go-with-the-flow. The best part: no one had their phones out unless it was to take photos.

Breakfast was put on by the Lions Club and it was amazing, especially since it was only $8 and you could basically have as much as you wanted while the young volunteers would come around and collect plates and offer to bring you drinks. It was the best!

The Lioness ladies were offering the face painting but Freya was not overly excited about having anyone paint her face even after her brave cousin had done it just moments before. Maybe next year.

Our favourite part by far was the horse and wagon ride back to a shack just within the tree line of the farmer's bush. As we rode down the 'bumpy road' as my daughter says, we noticed huge animal footprints that seemed as if they belonged to a cougar - the big cat, not the prowling middle aged woman. The birds perched in the coniferous trees lining the lane way were chirping and so full of life. The lane eventually came to a curve and just beyond it was an incredible shack with a front porch full of warm hot chocolate and coffee with an abundance of treats - heart shaped cookies, rice crispy squares and doughnuts. Just beside the shack sat a huge wheel rim likely from an old combine with benches encircling it as the fire's smoke blew into the air. This was the perfect place to spend family day. Immersed in the bush with people we love while snacking on tasty treats.

My husband and I followed our daughter around as she crunched her boots through the snow. We looked onward as she, her cousin and grandma all pretended to be birds with their arms reached out walking around the property. There was truly nothing in that moment that could bring a better smile to my face than soaking in these moments that warm my heart.

We are so thankful for our amazing community who put together Winterfest and other events. We appreciate those who offer their personal property and time to allow others to gain new and fun experiences. Lastly, we are so thankful that the people who attend such events are kind and appreciative for what is being offered and respectful of those offering it.

Mostly, we are so thankful for family and that we are thrilled to get out and have fun together!

See you next year Winterfest Family Day!
